It was a joy painting with friends in this peaceful valley on a quiet Autumn afternoon.  I almost finished this painting on location but was not completely happy with it. Looking at it with fresh eyes this week I was finally able to pull it together. Sometimes my paintings need to percolate for a while before they reveal their solutions!

This is the beautiful Los Vaqueros Watershed near Brentwood in Northern California.

I loved the sunlit hillside peeking through the lacy framework of this decaying old barn. Reinstein Ranch is a working horse and cattle ranch tucked into the beautiful countryside south of Mount Diablo in Northern California. It was a joy to paint there with friends on a quiet October morning.

Main Street, Locke

Labor Day weekend and the town of Locke was hopping! Merchants filled the sidewalks with fun, colorful stuff and Main Street felt like a big party. So fun painting there with friends!

For some reason Lewis Carroll's poem "Jabberwocky" was going through my head on this magical day in the Ruth Bancroft Garden. I guess it's because the borogoves were so extremely mimsy, and the mome raths were outgrabing like crazy.

Kitchen Door, Locke

It was fun painting with friends in Locke yesterday! In the crisp morning sunlight I was attracted to the back of the Chinese restaurant with its hodgepodge of doors and windows, overgrown garden and rickety picket fence. Built in 1915, Locke is a charming, colorful historic town on the Sacramento River in Northern California.

Sometimes my older paintings want a make-over. This orchard scene was originally dark and stormy, entirely too gloomy. A clear new sky, pink terrain and cheerful patterns were the cure!

My mom was an amazing artist and an avid gardener, and her unique, creative floral paintings glowed with joyful color. I was thinking about her and feeling her presence as this playful garden emerged on my easel this Mother's Day.

It was a joy inventing this playground of shape and color inspired by the beautiful Ruth Bancroft Garden. Started as a demo for the California Watercolor Association, finished this week while sheltering at home. I was glad to be able to lose myself in building and solving this intricate puzzle.
