Winter Peace

Started on a cool, misty day in the Diablo foothills, finished in my imagination. As the painting emerged memories and dreams shaped a gentle new terrain blanketed in soft, comforting color.

Older Than Dirt

This 1850's era barn was probably built with timber from the surrounding woods and still stands strong and sheltering, blending gently with the hillside. I sensed its roots reaching deep into the earth.

Painted with friends at Forest Home Farms Historic Park in San Ramon, California.

Rising Tide, Bay Point

Like boaters and fishermen, painters sync their rhythms with the tide. On this September afternoon along the Bay Point shoreline glimmering sky reflections appeared as river waters slowly filled the channel. When I painted here at low tide a week earlier the scene was completely different -- and equally beautiful.

Castle Rock Trail

These rocky outcroppings are just a prelude to the huge, magnificent Castle Rock formations you'll see further up this trail in the Mt. Diablo foothills. It was a joy to paint this peaceful valley on a sun-drenched September afternoon.

Bay Point Shoreline

I loved the patterns of raggedy old pilings and muddy rivulets that appeared at low tide along this quiet fishing channel in Bay Point, California. The scene changed rapidly as the tide came in -- the ebb and flow of delta life!

Carquinez Shoreline

It was a joy painting with friends on a sparkling mid-summer day at the Carquinez Strait shoreline, just east of Crockett in the San Francisco Bay Area. It was low tide and I was able to set up my easel on a little fishing beach dotted with old broken bricks, remnants of the brick factory that once thrived here. Nature and history mingle at this beautiful, inspiring location!

It was so interesting to discover the remains of this old stone cabin along the trail at Round Valley in Northern California. Roof, doors, windows and inhabitants are long gone and a tree is growing up through the floor. Vintage ranch buildings across the creek are still in use.

Figures from Life

I'm thrilled to be painting the figure from life again! Here is Aja de Coudreaux modeling for our group at the Lynn House Gallery in Antioch, California. With plenty of distance and fresh air in the room, Aja graciously removed her mask and allowed us to see her beautiful face. Her stunning headdress and intense gaze added drama to the pose. And here is Irina in a quiet, introspective pose, radiating serenity. "Irina," Acrylic on Panel 16" x 12", © Nancy Roberts, available in my Daily Paintworks Gallery.
